The highlight of the day was a meeting in the afternoon with the Bangladesh Frozen Food Exporters Association. They represent the owners of the shrimp processng factories and is made up almost entirely by shrimp industry. Unsurprisingly they have a very different view of the problems in the factories and the whether workers rights are being protected. To hear them speak you would imagine that people would be moving to Bangladesh to get a job working in a shrimp factory because conditions are so good.
After a lengthy presentation I asked whether it would be possible to visit one of the factories tomorrow to see for myself the working conditions. A feeble excuse was made that we had to have the permission of the Department of Fisheries, but if that could be arranged by tomorrow they would be happy to oblige. I wasn’t convinced!
