John Leech MP on the crticial commute bike ride

As you may be aware on Tuesday 21st February I introduced my Road Safety No.3 Bill to Parliament, the Bill was passed and is now awaiting its second reading which is scheduled for Friday 27th April.

Since my speech I have been inundated with letters and emails of support from constituents, non-constituents and road safety organisations. Below are just three examples of leading pressure groups who are experts in their field that believe my Bill can make a big difference to people’s lives.

Campaign for Better Transport

“Campaign for Better Transport is happy to support John Leech’s Road Safety No. 3 Bill and particularly welcomes the move to make it safer for children to walk, cycle or take public transport to school. Many parents and children want to be able to take the greener choice of transport to school but provision is often lacking. This Bill offers the opportunity to focus attention on what more can be done to make routes to schools safer.” Richard Hebditch – Campaigns Director, Campaign for Better Transport

Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS)

“I’m delighted that John has chosen to highlight the need to lower the drink-drive limit as part of his Private Member’s Bill. Deaths in drink-drive crashes account for 14% of all road deaths. A lower limit will send a clear message to drivers not to mix two activities: drinking and driving. On current figures it is also likely to reduce road deaths by between 50 and 65 a year. Good luck with the Bill.” Rob Gifford – Executive Director, PACTS

Sustrans charity

“Road safety is an important issue for many people in towns and cities across the UK.  It’s great that John Leech has listened to his constituents and taken the chance to raise this important issue in parliament.

John Leech’s Road Safety Bill highlights that dangerous streets in our communities prevent children from cycling to school, something that would make them more active and healthy, while reducing congestion.

It’s time for Ministers to act and make our streets safer by lowering speed limits and investing in safe cycling.”
Peter Foster, Sustrans Director for the North West of England
