Got a Vince Cable double whammy whilst having my breakfast this morning. On the national news, there was the great news that Nissan has chosen to invest £125 million in the UK by building its new Invitation model at its Sunderland factory! And there was the boss at Nissan, Trevor Mann, saying it was all because of a £9.3m grant from Vince’s department.
I have always been a believer that Government should enable businesses to create jobs. I have never accepted that the market always knows best.
It is also important that we, as Vince Cable has said, do not take this investment in isolation and remember that several big car companies have also made commitments to the UK. Vince said earlier: “This latest announcement highlights the UK’s track record of attracting inward investment. Global vehicle manufacturers are beating a path to the UK’s door. They recognise that the Government values the automotive sector”.
On the local NW news, Vince turned up again. He pledged to talk to GM bosses and offered support to try and secure the future of Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port factory.
Vince said,
“My job as the British Business Secretary has been to make the case to GM that Britain is a good place to be. They have a very productive plant, they have got a very productive work force, and they have got a very supportive Government”.
